Let’s all be honest: no matter how hard you try to be happy every day, it’s just a battle! Something always occurs that persuade you to give up. You get stuck in heavy traffic, or you spill coffee on your new outfit.
But, some people seem to stay happy no matter what. How do they do it? Well, here are eight things that you can include in your daily life to make yourself a little more joyous.
1. Set a goal
You can call it a to-do list or a list of chores. However, here’s the truth of the matter: if you take 2 minutes to organize your brain and set deadlines for completing your goals, it makes you more focused. Besides, it gives you a sense of accomplishment by the end of the day.
2. Everyday, pick one thing that you’re grateful for
It could be a simple text message from your husband or the perfect scrambled egg. Even the smallest positivity can work wonders against all the negativity you encounter every day. There’s a reason why those one-sentence journals work.
3. Try spending at least 20 minutes in nature
Nature has a way of uplifting your mood. Be it sunny or windy, popping outside for as little as 20 minutes (maybe during your lunch break) can do wonders for your mood. This impact has been proven by various studies, like this one from Stanford University.
4. Put yourself first
Being a great mother is a nothing less than an achievement, but every parent needs some “me time.” So take at least 30 minutes a day to do something that’s just for you. Do whatever you want: it could be reading a book or taking a walk in your garden.
5. Eat breakfast
Breakfast is an important meal. An empty stomach in the middle of the day can make you feel irritated. So, imagine what it can do when you haven’t eaten anything since the night before. It’s okay if you only have time for a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. But if your morning is already rushed, you can make pre-prepared breakfasts the night before.
6. Drink plenty of water
Just like skipping your breakfast, dehydration can make you feel irritated (according to a study by the University of Connecticut). So always keep a water bottle by your side, and drink plenty of water.
7. Listen to music
According to research conducted by Philips Research Laboratories in the Netherlands , listening to music during your commute or while you’re working can instantly lift your spirits.
8. Go to bed by 10 P.M
Sleep is like medication you take to be happier. If you don’t get enough of it, you’re bound to be cranky. Try this strategy: make an adult bedtime, and stick to it!
